The internet has become the new Wild West where anything goes and anything said is published and republished absent truth or validity.
If you have an axe to grind with a competitor, want to pass on false information about a restaurant, smear a person you do not like, lie your heart out then welcome to the world of false & scam information.
There are hundreds of websites these days that will allow a person to make false accusations about people, companies, restaurants, competitors, etc. without these sites validating the information put up. These sites simply want to grow their audience. No regulations exist and increasing the unfairness information can be placed anonymously.
Once information is posted on those sites it is only a matter of time in which Google or DogPile or any number of search engines through there algorithms will sweep up that specious information and post it for the world to see. It blinks like an on/off switch.
So when people Google a restaurant, or a company, or an individual all of this information is publicly displayed devoid of veracity. There is no indication by the search engines that information contained on their sites may be untrue and invalid. They could care less. Why? There are no regulations or laws providing for the posting of defamatory information.
Now if this information is posted anonymously then good luck in trying to eradicate it.
If you try and contact the sites that originally published this information rarely have contact information or a telephone number to call or a physical address to write.
Now as a result of overwhelming posts of scam information a new industry has arisen to try and counteract these negative pieces of information. Companies will charge you fees to publish positive information about our company, yourself, your restaurant etc. These articles or posts will in turn be picked up on the internet and will push down the negative information that currently exists.
So you now get the picture: you could be innocent of any and all negative information posted about you but you now find yourself paying out significant money to counteract negative untrue information.
Welcome to the side down world of the unregulated internet.
